3 Mistakes You’re Making With Your Email List

You’re building your email list, right? That’s what all the gurus say you should do right?

So why is it you aren’t making any money from this list? Why is it when you send a sales email you get unsubscribes in droves? It’s not like you’re emailing them all the time right? Just when you have something important to say or a discount to offer? why did they sign up if they were just going to unsubscribe… smh! And your email open rates? Might as well not send the email if no one is going to open them anyway… geez!

Sound familiar?

It does to me and it’s because I’ve been there before. When I was first starting out with my business I only sent the occasional email and it was about there being a sale in my handmade shop! I mean who doesn’t like a discount, amiright?

Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that…

After getting so frustrated I did a ton of research and purchased a few courses that taught me what to do and more importantly SHOWED me what not to do. Mistake #1: You’re only sending sales emails

You see… sales are for you & your business. There is nothing wrong with selling… as long as it’s in the best interest of your customers. Your customers are constantly asking themselves “WIIFM?” What’s in it for me? We, as people, are intrinsically motivated (some might call it selfish but I like the way intrinsically motivated sounds 😀 ) So unless your potential customers know that you have their best interest at heart they probably won’t buy from you. They don’t like making mistakes and they don’t enjoy the feeling of buyer’s remorse. So they basically don’t know, like, or trust you. Speaking of know, like, and trust let’s move on to reason #2.

Mistake #2: You haven’t indoctrinated them

transitive verb

  • 1: to instruct especially in fundamentals or rudiments : teach
  • 2: to imbue with a usually partisan or sectarian opinion, point of view, or principle.

Basically introduce them and teach them their new way of life and new thought patterns in relation to your business.

This is important to shift beliefs. When you shift beliefs in a way that opens your potential customers eyes to a new way of thinking and seeing, you become an authority figure to them. You also prove that you have their best interests at heart. This is how Charismatic Leaders works (whether Hitler, Jesus, or Stu McLaren). Indoctrinating your people from the beginning is how you become a trusted person to them and how they buy from & into you… over and over again.

Mistake #3: You aren’t educating and/or entertaining your people

If the only time you email your people is when you have a sale then you are missing a huge opportunity with your people. They want to be educated and entertained and if you can do that at the same time it’s great. This doesn’t mean to never send a sales email.

You can technically send a sales email EVERYDAY if they find it either educating and/or entertaining. Also selling isn’t only in monetary ways. Selling can be generating a click-through to something. Sending out educating emails to awesome content (created by you or others) can increase their belief that you have their best interest at heart and that when you recommend something or offer something for sale they are even more likely to buy it.

Let’s recap.

The 3 main mistakes why you’re makig with your email list that’s costing you sales are:

  1. only sending hard sales emails

  2. not indoctrinating them so they see you as an authority

  3. not educating and/or entertaining them
