Why You Resist Action Even Though You Want to Achieve Your Goals

You’ve done the goal-setting…
You’ve envisioned where you want to be in five years and reversed engineered it all the way back to the specific habits that you need to create in order to get there. You’ve mapped out the days and even your contingency plan for when you get off track but…

You haven’t even started walking to the track to start moving towards your goals.

What the what?
Why is that?

Well, there are a few reasons, one of them being physics. lol

The 1st reason is inertia.
Inertia

“An object at rest stays at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force” – Newton (pretty smart guy)
This is kinda like how it takes a huge amount of energy to get an airplane TO cruising altitude but once it’s at cruising altitude the energy required to keep it cruising is minimal. This is because of the same law,

“An object in motion stays in motion unless it is acted on by an equal and opposite force”
aka it’s in Momentum.

Think of your mind as the atmosphere that holding everything down and in place.  And your new habits as the airplane getting you from point a to point b.

Your mind keeps you where you are because its both easy and doesn’t require additional energy.  You mind’s #1 & #2 job is to keep you safe and preserve energy. Change is inherently unsafe for your mind. Regardless of if it’s a positive, wanted change or a negative type of change. Change leaves you unbalanced and surrounded in mental uncertainty.  It also requires a lot of mental energy until it creates a new habit.

The 2nd reason is judgment.
Another reason is that your mind doesn’t like doing things just because it “should”. It doesn’t quite work. The reason why it is getting you to do something is because of what it risks to LOSE if you don’t do it. This is way more powerful than what you stand to gain by doing this. Unfortunately, our minds are driven by fear for the most part. Remember it’s trying to keep us safe. Here on the ground at home in point A is safe compared to a plane ride to point B which is quite the unknown.

So, in truth, resistance is natural.
The question is how do you get passed it? By psyching yourself up. “Lighting a fire under your ass” to the benefits of the change you want or the goals you want to achieve. So not remembering the goals themselves but WHY you want to reach those goals. What’s the benefit behind the benefit of reaching those goals and what do you stand to lose by not going for it.  Connect and reconnect to that and it’ll eventually become hard to stop you because you’ve got… momentum!

Momentum is fuel
Momentum is the fuel entrepreneurs like you live on, but you have to basically continue to psych yourself up until this new behavior becomes a habit!  There are quite a few ways to do this. One way is writing your goals and the whys to your goals every day. Another is joining a mastermind or accountability group, and yet another way is to work directly with a coach who wants you to succeed just as much as (or just a little more than) you do.

Because once it’s a habit there ain’t no stopping you!

Here are some books I recommend to learn more about habits and how they can help you get to cruising altitude to achieve your goals and more.

The Power of Habit by Chris Duhigg

Atomic Habits by James Clear

7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey

What habits are you looking to form and how will you get yourself to actually take action?
